Anna Gavalda's first novel, Someone I Loved, is an enigma with seemingly no solution. The author leads us through a discussion between two individuals whom differ in every way.
Chloé is devastated; her husband has just ended their once tender love story, leaving her for his mistress. She seeks refuge with her children at the home of her parents-in-law where she finds herself one evening, one night, face to face with the father of the one she used to love. While she wants nothing more than to be alone, to have her isolation and solitude in which to cry her tears of pain and anger, she's confronted with this man whom she doesn't know at a chance meeting when he appears for a family meal. A cold, distant man, a shadow who seams incapable of giving. Chloé knows a thing or two about him though; the pain that his indifference caused her husband was not lost on her. The last person to be able to understand and consol her? Not that easy. During the night in question, they'll be able to explain themselves, and he, to show himself for who he is.
Chloé ends up asking for more. and so do we! The reader allows himself to be taken into the game; he attaches himself immediately to Chloé and experiences, with her, the discovery of this man from whom she expected nothing. The reader rejects, questions, listens and abandons himself in the end while Chloé rethinks her judgment. Almost too short. It would have been nicer to spend a bit more time with these characters. But Anna Gavalda may be right: it's important to know when to stop once everything's been said.
